I’m a little surprised by this story. I’m not surprised that La Roux makes very little money from record sales, given the way the industry works in this day and age, but I am surprised that most of their income is from radio airplay.
I’ve always been lead to believe that recording artists today earn the majority of their income from merchandise and licensing their music to be used in advertisements, films and TV shows. Also, I’ve frequently seen stories come up were recording artists complain that they earn very little income from radio play.
I saw La Roux at one of their concerts a few years ago and I remember being impressed by the wide variety of merchandise that was available to purchase after the show. So I’m quite shocked to hear that the band make little money from that.
Maybe the industry is changing? Or maybe La Roux just signed a bad contract? Who knows?
